Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 112
This psalm is a contrast between the righteous (9 verses!) and the wicked (1 verse only!). One blessing for the righteous is found in v.3a, “Wealth and riches will be in his house…” Praise the Lord that He will take care of our needs, and may even give us wealth if we are faithful to Him! But, unfortunately, some preachers have used these kinds of Scriptures and preached what is known as the “prosperity gospel.”
One basic teaching of the prosperity gospel is that if we give to God, God will give back to us even more. They often quote Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Praise God because He does often bless those who give by blessing their job, home, family, spiritual life, finances, health, etc.! But sometimes the motive of prosperity preachers is selfish—they try to get people to give more so the preachers themselves can receive more!
A Tokyo committee of pastors invited such a preacher many years ago to speak at our conference. At the beginning we didn’t know that side of him. We invited him for a healing conference. During his preaching, he often would speak about giving and stirred up the people to give, so there was an unusually large offering at the conference.
At the end of the conference, he demanded that the committee give him all the money after paying the conference expenses! We were shocked at his demand, and didn’t know how to respond, so he succeeded in taking with him over 4M yen! Through this experience, we realized that his motive in preaching was to get money for himself, so we never invited him again.
Let’s be thankful for Scriptures like v.3 and thank God for blessing us financially. But let’s also be free from greed so we never misuse those verses and never end up a slave of money.
Jesus said it best in Matt 6:24, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
Devotion 2 of 2: Rev 10
This chapter is a short one about a mighty angel with a little book. John asks for the book, and, after getting it, he eats it. It tastes sweet in his mouth, but becomes bitter in his stomach.
Many symbols are used in this chapter. I would like to write my thoughts on what a few of them mean.
*The angel was clothed with a cloud (v.1). Cloud = the Holy Spirit
*Rainbow on head (v.1) = God’s promises; in Noah’s day, rainbow was sign of covenant, or promise
*Little book open in angel’s hand (v.2) = Bible, God’s promises, opened in LD
*Angel cried with a loud voice as a lion roars (v.3) = Important message with great authority
*Angel with feet on sea and land swore delay no longer (v.5-6) = Message for world comes to pass now!
*Mystery of God finished (v.7) = God’s endtime plan fulfilled!
*John ate book; it was sweet in mouth but bitter in stomach (v.8-10) = God’s Word and plan contains glorious revival but also persecution and martyrdom
Let’s pray God’s endtime plan will be fulfilled!
