Devotion 1 of 1: Ps 78
This psalm by Asaph records the history of Israel’s journey, the many times she sinned, and God’s many blessings. These rebellions took place in 3 places: Egypt (v.12-13, 42-51), the wilderness (v.14-41, 52-54) and Canaan (v.55-72). In Canaan, Israel finally achieved its calling to be a glorious kingdom under King David (v.67-72). But later, because of its sins, it fell from that pinnacle, split in 2, then was taken into captivity (v.61).
We can apply these Scriptures to the history of the Protestant Church. The church has done many wonderful things. But it has also committed mistakes, which may prevent it from completing its journey to become the glorious endtime church that God has planned.
What are some lessons we can apply to the church? First, Egypt symbolizes the Protestant Reformation. The wilderness speaks of the Pentecostal Movement. And Canaan represents the LDR (Last Day Revival). Like Israel, God is leading the church on a journey to restore it to its true calling.
But Israel rebelled against God at all 3 stages. How does that apply to the church? Among its many sins, Israel twice forgot the miracles and wonders that God had done in Egypt (v.11, 32-34)! This corresponds to the church not accepting the miracle power of God that He restored in the Pentecostal Movement and will restore in the LDR.
Let us not repeat Israel’s failure but determine to believe God can and will restore His miraculous power to the church in the LDR! Then and only then can we enter into the Promised Land of the world-wide endtime revival!
2 PET 1: Free sharing!
Peter says an interesting thing in v.12, “For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.” I believe what he means is that for every generation, there is “Present Truth.” This is the truth that God is restoring in that generation.
For example, the present truth in 1517 was “The just shall live by faith” (Rom 1:17). This meant that forgiveness does not come by buying indulgences but only by faith in Christ.
The present truth in 1906 was Acts 2:1-4, about the Holy Spirit filling believers, resulting in them speaking in tongues.
Perhaps the present truth in the LDR will be John 14:12, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.” But we are not yet sure. Whatever it is, when God reveals it, let’s believe it and join in the LDR to win Japan for Jesus!
