Devotion 1 of 2: Num 17

NUM 17: Answers!
1) 12 rods from the 12 tribes were placed in front of the Ark of the Covenant. God said the rod that blossomed would show his choice for High Priest. The next day, Aaron’s rod, representing Levi, had sprouted blossoms and almonds, showing he was God’s choice (v.1-11).
2) It was kept inside the Ark of the Covenant (v.10).
3) They recognized their attitude was wrong, and they feared for their lives (v.12-13).

Devotion 2 of 2: Num 18

This chapter deals with the ministry of and support for the priests and Levites. We can also see the different levels of the priesthood here.
The 1st level was the High Priest, Aaron (v.1). The 2nd level was the sons of Aaron (v.1), who were priests. The 3rd level was the tribe of Levi, the Levites, who were not priests but attended to the needs of the priests and the tabernacle but could not go near the articles of the tabernacle (v.2-3a). And the 4th level was the outsider, non-Levites, who could not go near the priests (v.4).
I believe God set up this order to keep the priestly ministry pure and free from corruption. In the NT, we are all called to be priests, so we can all minister to God at church! But it’s good to realize from this passage that if our attitude is not that of a priest with a pure heart to serve God and his people, then our ministry will not bring blessing, but rather, confusion and division. Let’s seek God to keep our hearts pure as we serve him!
