Devotion 1 of 2: Ezra 3
When the old men saw the foundation of the new temple, they wept with a loud voice! I believe it was because of disappointment compared to the admirable foundation of Solomon’s Temple. I think the same can be said about the restoration of the church. The beginning and part-way construction always looks unimpressive, but when the restoration is complete, the church will be a glorious church without spot or wrinkle!

Devotion 2 of 2: Ezra 4
1) 1st, they tried to deceive the Jews into working together to rebuild the temple (v.2), but the Jews rejected that offer (v.3). 2nd, they troubled the Jews, trying to discourage them and frustrate their purpose (v.4-5), but apparently that didn’t work either. Finally, they brought an accusation with some lies against the Jews (v.13-16) to King Artaxerxes of Persia (v.6), who was the authority over the Jews. So the king ordered all temple construction stopped (v.23-24).
2) Satan tries to get us to accept him to make us compromise, like when Rome made Christianity the state religion of the empire. Then he will also accuse us, often with lies, to try to discourage us and make us give up. He does this through persecution. So let’s be aware of Satan’s tactics and overcome him through our faith confession, the blood of the Lamb and loving Jesus more than our own lives (Rev 12:11).
