Devotion 1 of 2: John 19

The special Sabbath meant that it was a holiday Sabbath, not a Saturday Sabbath. This means that the crucifixion did not have to take place on Friday before the weekly Sabbath, but could be another day, before the holiday Sabbath. So, because Jesus prophesied in Matt 12:40, “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth,” I believe Jesus was crucified and buried on Thursday to fulfill the required 3 days and 3 nights. See the chart of Jesus’ burial time below using Jewish days of the week.
Day 1 = Thu 5-6p Night 1 = Fri 6p-6a
Day 2 = Fri 6a-6p Night 2 = Sat 6p-6a
Day 3 = Sat 6a-6p Night 3 = Sun 6p-6a
So this means that it was not 3 complete days, but perhaps 1 hour only of the 1st day. But I believe that partial days can be counted as 1 day.

Devotion 2 of 2: Ps 97

V.7 says, “All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols…” Japanese people worship images and pray to idols, thinking they must do this to honor their ancestors. But when they die, they will realize the truth right away that the images are not actual gods, but are man-made. And they will feel ashamed of believing a man-made religion and false gods, while all the while rejecting the true God who truly loved them! Let’s help as many Japanese as possible to discover the real God and his wonderful salvation!
