Devotion 1 of 2: John 3

Contrast between Nicodemus (N) and the Samaritan woman (S). 1) N was a Jew; S was a Samaritan. 2) N was elderly in years (3:4); S was younger, or maybe approaching middle-age. 3) N was well-educated; S was most likely not. 4) N was a Pharisee (3:1); S was an ordinary person. 5) N was of high rank, a member of the Jewish ruling council (3:1); S was an outcast in her town as evidenced by her going to the well at noon to avoid the other women of her town (4:6-7). 6) N lived a life highly respected by the community; S had no respect in her town because she had divorced 5 times and was now living with a man (4:18). 7) N sought Jesus at night (3:2); Jesus sought S at noon (4:4-6). But both had one thing in common! They both were searching for answers!

Devotion 2 of 2: Judg 17

Because there was no king, people did as they saw fit, which was sinful. Examples: Micah stole silver from his mother (v.2); Micah’s mother gave him back 200 shekels of silver to make an idol (v.4); Micah made an ephod and household gods and installed a son as his priest (v.5); and Micah hired a Levite to become his priest (v.12). I think God has given as kings for us today: Jesus, the King of kings; the Bible, which contains King Jesus’ words; and after those two, good spiritual leaders.
