Devotion 1 of 2: Judg 11
In Jephthah’s words in v.14-27, we can see the thinking in Bible days (as well as until recently) of when it is appropriate to take other people’s land and when it isn’t. If there is a war, then the victor can take the defeated side’s land (v.20-22). But if there isn’t a war, then taking land is prohibited (v.16-18). So that's why after Israel won the war against the inhabitants of Canaan, she could take their land.

Devotion 2 of 2: Judg 12
From Jephthah’s battle against Ephraim in v.1-6, what impressed me was that the Ephraimites betrayed their identity by their words. They could not pronounce “Shibboleth” correctly (v.6). I felt the lesson here was that our words reveal our inside. If we have a lot of flesh, then our words will betray our fleshly nature, even if we try to hide it!
