Devotion 1 of 2: 1 John 2
Verse 18: First, I think there are 2 antichrists here. “The antichrist,” is a single person who will rule the world, and “many antichrists,” are false Christs or people who have the spirit of antichrist and oppose Jesus but who do not rule over the world. There were many false Christs in John’s day, so John believed his day was the last hour because Jesus taught that one sign of the last days was many false Christs would appear (Matt 24:5).
Verse 19: “They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us” = Many of the antichrists were people who left the church! They had never had a genuine born-again experience and never gotten saved!
