Devotion 1 of 2: 2 Cor 4
Jesus is an example of v.16-18 through suffering agony on the cross, but through that he achieved salvation and eternal glory for mankind, which, for Jesus, far outweighed his sufferings! Another example of suffering which resulted in eternal benefits is Cory Ten Boom. She was Dutch but with her family saved many Jews by hiding them in their home on risk of their own lives. They were finally caught and spent almost one year in horrible conditions in the Nazi concentration camps. Her father and older sister died, but Cory lived to testify to millions of people of God’s love and forgiveness, even for the Germans who tormented them. This resulted in many people getting saved, and many people being delivered from their hatred for Germany.

Devotion 2 of 2: Isa 28
Is 28:11-12 is a prophecy with a double meaning. One meaning is God spoke to the Jews through “foreign lips” = “foreign language” = Assyrian, through the Assyrian invasion, but they didn’t listen. Another meaning is God spoke through “strange tongues” = “speaking in tongues (1 Cor 14:21-22)” = Acts 2, when 3000 did listen and get saved, but the vast majority of Jews didn’t listen. Speaking in tongues is an illustration of the rest in Is 28:12 because it’s not done by self-effort but by yielding our mouth to the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 14:14)! This understanding was needed for Jews because they believed in works and self-effort to keep the law to get saved (Gal 2:16).
