I think that James emphasized works with faith because some people say they believe in Jesus, but their works do not change. By contrast, Paul emphasized faith without works because some people were claiming we can only be saved if we are circumcised (if we have works). So both teachings addressed different problems, and therefore both teachings are needed in balance!

Devotion 2 of 2: Num 3
I think God’s original plan was to make the firstborn of Israel priests. But that plan changed when Israel worshiped the golden calf at Mt. Sinai (Ex. 32:19). But the tribe of Levi didn’t worship the calf, and instead joined Moses and executed judgment and cleansed Israel of 3,000 idol worshippers (Ex. 32:26-28). So God decided to make Levi His priests instead of the firstborns!
