Devotion 1 of 1: Joel 2
Joel talked about an invasion of locusts in chapter 1. In chapter 2, he speaks about an army, which, in v.11, he calls His, or God’s, army! There are 2 opposite interpretations of what scholars call “Joel’s Army.” Some believe it is God’s army of believers, while others believe it is the army of AC. I was taught for many years that it was God’s army, but now I believe it’s AC’s army!
The reason I believe that is v.3, “A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns; the land is like the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; surely nothing shall escape them.” This army turns the Garden of Eden into a desolate wilderness! I don’t believe an army of believers will do that!
But why does v.11 call them “His army,” or God’s army? It’s because God will use AC as his servant, much like he used Nebuchadnezzar as his servant (Jer 25:9; 27:6; 43:10). God used a heathen king, Nebuchadnezzar, to destroy Judah and Jerusalem, to cleanse the idolatry, immorality and child sacrifices that the Jews were doing (Jer 25:1-14; 7:9; 32:35)!
In the same way, God will use AC to cleanse the church to change it from a Laodicean “lukewarm” church to a church that’s either hot or cold! Jesus cannot stand a lukewarm church and says in Rev 3:16, “…because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth!”
Being hot means to defy AC and be loyal to Jesus, even if it means being martyred! Being cold means compromising one’s faith, taking the mark, and worshiping the image of the beast to save one’s life (Rev 13:15-17).
We can divide this chapter into 3 parts:
1) v.1-11. AC’s army will wreak havoc in the world, trying to wipe out the church and the Jews.
2) v.12-17. This persecution and invasion of Israel will cause 2/3 of the Jews to die (Zech 13:8), and they will desperately call out to God to save them (v.17).
3) v.18-32. And God will answer, defeat AC (v.20) and save the remnant who are still alive (v.32).
Let’s pray that Israel and the church will not compromise to AC but defeat him through faith and courage!
