Devotion 1 of 1: Deut 33
In this chapter Moses gives his last prophecy over the 12 tribes of Israel. There are 2 passages in the Bible of prophecies over the 12 sons and the 12 tribes, in Gen 49 and Deut 33. We can learn a lot by comparing the 2 passages.
The prophecy to Reuben, the firstborn, in v.6 is quite a letdown: “Let Reuben live, and not die, nor let his men be few.” Why such a poor prophecy? When we read Gen 49:3-4, we find out why. Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn, his might, beginning of strength, and excellency of dignity and power! But he committed adultery with one of Jacob’s concubines, so he lost the firstborn blessing!
By contrast, Joseph not only receives praise in Jacob’s prophecy in Gen 49:22-26, but was told by Moses in Deut 33:17, that his glory is like a firstborn bull! So the firstborn blessing of the double portion was passed on to Joseph! He produced 2 of Israel’s tribes through his 2 sons, Ephraim and Manasseh!
The LDC is called to be the Church of the Firstborn (Heb 12:22-23)! Let us not lose that blessing like Reuben did, but fulfill our calling to rule, as Joseph did, by overcoming all trials through believing what God promised to us, he will bring to pass!
