Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 22

We see various laws of morality in this chapter. The first two have to do with helping a neighbor (v.1-4). If his livestock goes astray or his garment is lost, and you find it, you were obligated to help restore the lost thing to him. Or, if his livestock fell, it was an Israeli’s duty to help his neighbor lift it back up again.
This law would have applied to the priest and Levite who saw the traveler who was robbed and beaten in the Good Samaritan story (Luke 10:30-37). If Jews were obligated to help a neighbor with his livestock, they were certainly obligated to help their neighbor himself if he was robbed and left badly wounded! But, sadly, although they had studied the Scriptures, they didn’t practice it and didn’t help the poor traveler!
We have the same thinking of the Levite and priest within our flesh! Let’s seek God to remove that from us and give us the love of Christ instead so that we do stop and help our neighbors when they are in trouble!

Devotion 2 of 2: Rom 6

This chapter deals with our lifestyle, whether we walk in obedience and become slaves of righteousness or walk in uncleanness and become slaves of sin (v.17-19).
To make this teaching more concrete, I think it’s good to apply it to our tongue. We are all guilty of speaking bad words of criticism, judgment, or discouragement, etc. If we don’t repent but continue speaking that way, our tongues will become slaves of negative talking and bring forth death.
But if we seek God and determine to speak good words, our tongues will gradually change and become slaves of righteousness and speak more and more words of encouragement and love. Let’s become slaves of righteousness with our tongues!
