Devotion 1 of 2: Hos 4

We see a picture of Israel’s moral state in v.14: “I will not punish your daughters when they commit harlotry, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for the men themselves go apart with harlots, and offer sacrifices with a ritual harlot.” God says he wouldn’t punish the women for harlotry because the men were doing the same thing! The words “offer sacrifices with a ritual harlot” are used, showing the harlotry was being done as an act of worship in pagan temples in Israel. Despite that, God wanted to show his love for Israel through Hosea forgiving and buying back (redeeming) Gomer!

Devotion 2 of 2: John 4

1) She was completely rejected and had no friends because of her disastrous 5 divorces (v.18). We know this because she went to the well at the 6th hour (12 noon) (v.6), the hottest time of the day, to avoid the other women because no one would associate with her. Women go to the well in the morning and evening because it’s cooler then.

2) She was transformed from the town’s outcast to the town’s revivalist, leading the town to Jesus (v.28-30, 39-41). She was transformed because she realized Jesus was the prophet and Messiah (v.16-26), who had the answers to life’s questions! And also, that Messiah didn’t despise or judge her but talked with her respectfully and treated her with dignity, not shamefully!
