Devotion 1 of 2: Luke 15
1) The younger son probably didn’t feel love from his father, so he disrespects him by demanding his inheritance while the father is still alive (v.12)! Then he shows he doesn’t want to be with him by leaving him soon after (v.13). Then the son spends his money on reckless living (v.13), which indicates he probably felt bound under his father, and that’s why he went wild.
2) The older son was a workaholic, as indicated by him being in the field while everyone else was celebrating his brother’s return (v.25). He was angry and refused to join the party because his father raised him strictly, not giving him even a goat to have a good time with his friends (v.29). So he judged his brother for sinful living (v.30), just as his father had probably judged him.
3) The father was always looking for his younger son, so that’s why he saw him from a long way off (v.20). He didn’t rebuke him but forgave him and treated him with love and honor (v.20-24). By doing this, he showed grace, not legalism! And he didn’t scold the older brother, also, but talked to him with love, trying to change him from legalism to grace as he himself had been changed (v.31-32)!

Devotion 2 of 2: Prov 15
V.18 spoke to me, “A hot-tempered man stirs up strife.” There is a lot of strife in the US now. One reason is because of the culture of “Me first,” and “It’s okay to be proud and cocky and to fight for your rights.” This lifestyle of anger, violence and using guns is promoted a lot in US movies. Another reason for strife is because of a leader who is hot-tempered and spills out anger and criticism every day on the internet and TV. So the US is now divided into 2 sides, and followers of that leader sometimes talk of civil war and using violence to get what they feel is right! Many Christians in the US are followers of that leader. As a result, at one church the young people told the pastor they don’t agree with Jesus’ teachings about being humble and turning the other cheek. They believe those teachings don’t work, and they would rather follow that leader. We need discernment so we’ll not be deceived. The result of that leader’s lifestyle is now being revealed. He will have to face at least 4 trials for accusations of crimes. If he is found guilty and must be imprisoned, that will be a lesson for Christians who thought it was better to follow him rather than Jesus.
