Devotion 2 of 2: Jer 25
The prophecy of the Babylonian Captivity lasting 70 years (v.11) is complicated to calculate. The reason is because the 2 main Babylonian invasions and captivities happened in 597 and 586 BC., and the Jews were released from Babylon in 538 BC, so the years don’t add up. However, some Bible scholars point out 605 BC as the first possible date. At that time, only a small number of Jews were taken captive, but among them were Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego! So I think God also recognized 605 BC as the beginning of the captivity! Then, although the Jews were released in 538 BC, they might have actually returned to the land in 536 BC because of all the preparations and travel involved. If so, the time of captivity would amount to about 70 years.
