Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 3

1) Eli’s eyes were weakening, he could barely see and the lamp of God had almost gone out (v.2-3). The Medieval Church was weakening, could not see spiritually and the lamp of God’s Word, the truth, was almost extinguished in the church.
2) God called Samuel, showed him the failures of Eli’s leadership and spoke to him about a great change that would take place (v.4-14). In the same way, God raised up spiritual leaders who saw the failures of the church and gave them a vision for revival and change in the church!

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 4

It signifies the loss of the presence and glory of God from the church of the Dark Ages. The defeat of Israel’s army (v.10) symbolizes the spiritual defeat of the church. The death of Eli’s sons (v.11) and Eli himself (v.18) represents the church dying spiritually. Eli’s grandson being named Ichabod symbolized God’s glory departing from the church.
