Devotion 1 of 2: 1 John 3
I think it’s very difficult to accept v.9 as is (Whoever has been born of God does not sin…and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God), because we are born again and yet sometimes we sin! So we must qualify it by saying: “Whoever has been born of God does not continue in sin,” or, “…does not commit gross sin,” etc. Another way of looking at v.9 is to say it’s talking about the inner spirit-man that was born of God inside us when we got saved because it cannot sin! In the same way, we can look at v.8: “He who sins is of the devil…” as talking about the inner flesh because the flesh sins and is of the devil!
