Devotion 1 of 2: Eccl 1
This book is the product of King Solomon trying to find meaning in life without fully serving God. His conclusion is found in v.2, ‘“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”’ He says “vanity” 5 times in 1 verse, emphasizing how empty, or how much like a vapor (= meaning of vanity), brief and meaningless, life is!
In v.4-11, Solomon points out that nature continues endlessly, without change, and the past is quickly forgotten. In v.12-18, he laments that wisdom is not the answer for with much wisdom is much grief! Let’s learn the lesson that life without God is empty!

本書は、ソロモン王が神に全心をもって仕えることなく、人生の意味を見出そうとした試みの産物である。彼の結論は2節に見られる。「伝道者は言う。空の空、空の空。すべては空。」 彼は1つの節の中で「空」という言葉を5回も使い、人生がいかに空しく、あるいは蒸気（＝「空」の意味）のようにいかに短く無意味であるかを強調している。
4-11節で、ソロモンは自然が終わりなく変化することなく続き、過去のことはすぐに忘れ去られてしまうと指摘する。12-18節で、彼は智慧が答えにはならず、知恵が増せば悩みも増すのだと嘆く。神のいない人生は空しいという教訓を学ぼうではないか。
Devotion 2 of 2: John 1
Revelation that John the Baptist was Elijah is not found in John, but it’s found in the other 3 gospels in Matt 17:13, Mark 9:13, Luke 1:17. Each gospel has its purpose and doesn’t necessarily need to fill other purposes!
Concerning John the Baptist when he was asked if he was Elijah, he denied it (v.21)! Why? I believe it was because he didn’t actually understand that Malachi’s Elijah prophecy was a metaphor and wouldn’t be fulfilled literally but spiritually! So, he was Elijah, not physically, but because he had the spirit and power of Elijah upon him (Luke 1:17)!
デボーション2/2：ヨハネ1章
バプテスマのヨハネがエリヤであったという啓示は、ヨハネ伝には見られないが、ほかの三つの福音書（マタイ 17:13、マルコ 9:13、ルカ 1:17）には見られる。それぞれの福音書にはそれぞれの目的があり、必ずしもほかの目的を補う必要はないのである。
バプテスマのヨハネが自身についてエリヤであるかと問われた際、彼はそれを否定した（21節）。なぜか。彼は、マラキのエリヤに関する預言が比喩であり、文字どおりではなく霊的に成就するものであることを、実際には理解していなかったからであると考える。すなわち、彼がエリヤであったのは、肉体的にそうだったからではなく、エリヤの霊と力とを身に帯びていたからなのである（ルカ 1:17）。
