Devotion 1 of 2: Josh 13
This chapter shows that Israel did not possess all their land in Canaan (v.1). It also shows that the 2.5 tribes of Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh decided to settle on the east side of Jordan instead of fully entering the Promised Land (v.8-32), which was God’s will. And this was the reason Israel couldn’t possess all of Canaan!
The 2.5 tribes chose their land because it looked good for grazing their cattle (Num 32:1-5, 33). They were like Lot, who chose to live in Sodom because it looked well-watered (Gen 13:10-11). Let’s not live by sight but by obeying God’s will!
Devotion 2 of 2: Josh 14
This chapter describes the vigor of Caleb at 85 years of age (v.6-10)! He was as strong as at 40 years old, when he spied out the land with 11 other spies in Num 13-14 (v.11)! And he wanted to inherit a mountain where the Anakim (giants) lived because he was confident he could drive them out (v.12)!
Both Joshua and Caleb are our models for how the LDC should be in faith and courage! Because I’m 81 years of age now, I make Caleb my goal to be strong in faith and bravery so that even at 85 I can be part of the LDC!
