Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 19
V.15b says, “…by the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses the matter shall be established.” God ordained the principle that 2 or 3 witnesses were needed in order to establish something serious, like a crime or a murder (17:6).
The life of Joseph demonstrates this principle. He saw 2 dreams that revealed his calling as a ruler (Gen 37:5-11). Then he overcame betrayal and rose to rulership 3 times to confirm his calling as a ruler (Gen 39-41). And Pharaoh had 2 dreams, showing their contents were established by God and would happen shortly (Gen 41:32).
Devotion 2 of 2: Deut 20
Compared to today’s Geneva Conventions warfare rules, OT warfare was very brutal and cruel. God told Israel that they must kill every man, woman and child who lived in the Promised Land! This was to cut off all their idolatrous practices from influencing Israel (v.16-18). We must understand this was the culture of the OT world.
And when Israel warred against far away enemies, they killed the males, but they could keep the women, children, and livestock as spoils (v.13-15). But often the women were violated and, with their children, used as slaves.
