Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 40
This psalm was written to show us how David climbed out of discouragement and into triumph. At the beginning, David was in a horrible pit of miry clay (v.2)! But he cried to the Lord (v.1) and even praised God despite his circumstances (v3). As a result, he was brought out of the pit, and his feet were set upon a solid rock (v.2)!
In our times of testing, let us, too, not give up but wait patiently on the Lord (v.1), confessing He is faithful and will not fail us! I’m going through a trial now with Yoshiko hospitalized for 14 months. Thank you, Lord, for this encouraging psalm!

この詩篇は、ダビデがいかにして落胆から立ち上がり、勝利へと至ったかを示すために書かれました。最初、ダビデは泥沼の滅びの穴の中にいました（2節）。しかし彼は主に叫び求め（1節）、その境遇にもかかわらず神を賛美しました（3節）。その結果、彼は穴から引き上げられ、その足は堅固な磐の上に据えられたのです（2節）。
私たちも試練の時、あきらめることなく、主を忍耐強く待ち望み（1節）、主は真実であり、私たちを見捨てない方だと告白しましょう。 今、私はよし子が14ヶ月間入院中という試練の中にいます。主よ、この励ましの詩篇をありがとうございます！

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Cor 8
This chapter deals with the sensitive subject of eating food offered to idols. Paul teaches that idols are not real gods, so eating food offered to idols is okay, because it’s neither good or bad (v.8).
But if a new believer thinks food offered to idols is a sin, but sees a mature believer do it, so he does the same, but his conscience condemns him, and he stumbles because of it, then Paul says it’s not good to eat (v.7-13)!
In Japan, this teaching applies to offering incense at funerals and graves, hatsumode, etc. Let’s ask God to lead us in each situation.

この章では、偶像に捧げられた食物を食べるというデリケートな問題を取り上げています。パウロは、偶像は真の神ではないので、偶像に捧げられた食物を食べることは良いことでも悪いことでもないと教えています（8節）。
しかし、信仰歴の浅い人が偶像に捧げられた食物は罪だと考えているのに、信仰歴の深い人がそうしているのを見て自分も同じようにしてしまい、良心が咎め、つまずいてしまうような場合、パウロは食べるのは良くないと言っています（7-13節）。
日本では、この教えは葬儀や墓参りでの香の供え方、初詣などにも当てはまります。それぞれの状況において、神の導きを求めましょう。
