Devotion 1 of 2: Num 35
This chapter tells of the cities for the Levites and the Cities of Refuge in Canaan that God had ordained. There were 6 Cities of Refuge, 3 of both sides of the Jordan (v.14). This seems strange to me because 9.5 tribes (79%) were on the west, and only 2.5 tribes (21%) on the east of Jordan, so the west should have gotten at least 4 cities!
At any rate, the Cities of Refuge were a picture of the protection from Satan that Christ provides to us through the cross (v.16-28). In ancient Hawaii, there was a City of Refuge that protected people from death, too!

Devotion 2 of 2: Num 36
Often, after solving one problem, another problem props up. We see such a situation in this chapter. The previous problem was that a man named Zelophehad had died with no sons, only 5 daughters (27:1-11). The law said that only sons received inheritance, but the 5 daughters appealed, and were rewarded with their father’s land!
But in chapter 36, a new problem arose. If the daughters married outside their tribe, that land would be lost to their tribe. So, to prevent that, God commanded for the daughters to only marry within their tribe (v.6).
