Devotion 1 of 2: Ex 21
This chapter contains laws that God gave to Israel while they camped at Mt. Sinai. The laws dealt with servants (v.1-11), violence (v.12-27) and animal control (v.28-36). Israel was established as a nation at this time.
One purpose of laws is to protect the rights of the weak against abuse by the strong. In one nation today, the names of rich men who sexually abused under-aged girls are being kept secret by the president. They have been hidden for years, but perhaps they will finally be exposed soon. Let’s pray the world will fight to protect the weak.

Devotion 2 of 2: Ex 22
The law in v.21 said, “You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” Hidden in this law is one of the reasons why God allowed the Jews to be oppressed as slaves in Egypt! It was so they could learn what it felt like to be oppressed, so that they would never oppress other people!
Jesus agreed with this when He taught in Matt 7:12, “…whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” So, how do we keep the law? By doing for others what we want from them.

21節には、「在留異国人を苦しめてはならない。しいたげてはならない。あなたがたも、かつてはエジプトの国で、在留異国人であったからである」とあります。この律法には、神がユダヤ人をエジプトで奴隷として虐げることを許した理由の一つが隠されています。それは、彼らが虐げられるとはどういうことかを学び、決して他の人々を虐げないようにするためでした。
イエスもマタイ7:12で、「…自分にしてもらいたいことは、ほかの人にもそのようにしなさい。これが律法であり預言者です」と教え、このことに同意しられました。では、どのように律法を守るのか。それは、自分が人にしてもらいたいことを、人にしてあげることです。
