Devotion 1 of 2: Nah 1

This book is a prophecy of judgment and destruction against Nineveh and the Assyrian Empire (v.1-3). Nahum lived in the 7th century BC, before the fall of Nineveh in 612 BC. Because Judah was being threatened by Assyria, Nahum’s prophecies brought them great comfort (v.15).
One interesting thing to point out is that God showed mercy to Nineveh by sending Jonah to preach there, and they responded by repenting, so God didn’t destroy them. This took place around 773-755 BC. But their repentance did not last long, as they destroyed northern Israel and took the people captive in 722 BC.
Let’s remember that God is merciful and forgives, but when man reverts back to his sinful ways, God will not overlook their evil. He will give them the judgment they deserve!

Devotion 2 of 2: Col 2

Paul warns the Colossian believers about two enemies of Christ in this chapter. In v.1-10, it’s the philosophies of men, and in v.11-23, it’s legalism, following the Law.
Philosophy is man’s attempt at explaining life’s great questions through wisdom, knowledge and logic. What they are doing is better than living without meaning. But philosophy’s greatest lack is not realizing the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ (v.2-3).
Legalism is following the laws of Moses. So, circumcision (v.11), sabbaths (v.16), regulations (v.20), etc. become very important. But no matter how much one tries to fulfill the law, he fails and sins! That’s why Jesus came to earth—to fulfill the law, nail it to the cross and wipe it out for us (v.14).
Now, we accept Christ’s righteousness as our own, try our best to follow Him, but if we sin, we don’t condemn ourselves but ask Him for forgiveness. And He gives it to us!
