Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 23
I think the rod was primarily used as a weapon to protect the sheep from predators and the staff was primarily used as a tool to guide and care for the sheep. The rod represents Jesus’ power and authority in combating evil, healing sickness and driving out evil spirits, while the staff represents Jesus’ love and Word in guiding, protecting and caring for us.

Devotion 2 of 2: Ps 24
I think v.7-10 refer to the Eastern Gate, also called the Beautiful Gate or the Golden Gate. It is likely that Jesus passed through this gate when he entered Jerusalem before the crucifixion in Matt. 21:7-13, and it is likely he will pass through it again after his 2nd coming on the Mt. of Olives (Zech. 14:4). It is said that the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman sealed the gate shut in 1541 AD in order to prevent the Jewish Messiah from entering Jerusalem upon his appearance.
