Devotion 1 of 2: Prov 11
V.14 says, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” This is the foundation of democracy, where elections are held and the majority selects their leader. The leader then forms his cabinet, and through discussions, open sharing and detailed analysis, decisions are made.
Autocratic or dictatorial rule is different. A strong leader emerges and rules the nation. He might have won by election, but often it was rigged. Once in power, dictators don’t relinquish power. Often they use their office to gain much private wealth, often at the expense of the nation’s natural resources or by receiving bribes for favors.
Although not guaranteed, making decisions through discussion by a multitude of counselors is the best way of avoiding mistakes and making wise decisions. Dictators often make bad decisions, which cost the nation great losses in finances, trade, social progress and even human lives. Let’s pray our leaders will not become dictators.
Devotion 2 of 2: Luke 11
In v.5-8, we see the story of a man who asks his friend at midnight to lend him 3 loaves of bread so he can feed a visitor. At first the friend refuses, but because the man asks persistently, he arises from bed and gives him what he asked for. This story is important to the last day church.
In the Bible, midnight is often a symbol of the endtime. One Scripture that shows this is Matt 25:6. At midnight a voice cried out to awaken the 10 virgins to tell them that the bridegroom was coming! Also, 1 Thes 5:2 says that the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.
What v.5-8 is teaching us is that the church in the endtime should be persistently asking God for provisions to meet people’s needs. It can be food, because we won’t be able to buy or sell. But it can also be healing, deliverance from demons, or anointing to share the gospel with power to save people. Let’s pray without giving up!
