Devotion 1 of 2: Ezek 23

God uses a parable of 2 sisters, Oholah and Oholibah, symbolizing northern Israel and southern Judah, to graphically illustrate how terrible and foolish the sins of both kingdoms were.
Their sins were terrible because they worshiped idols, which was spiritual harlotry and adultery against God (v.5, 37); they also committed physical adultery as acts of worship to the idols (v.7, 14-21); and they sacrificed their own children to idols, defiled the temple and profaned the Sabbath (v.37-39).
Their sins were foolish because both kingdoms were destroyed by the same heathen nations they learned idolatry from (v.9-10); and because they would be laughed to scorn by those nations (v.32); and because God had warned them of the consequences, yet they did it (v.46-49).

Devotion 2 of 2: Matt 23

This chapter is a strong rebuke by Jesus toward the scribes and Pharisees (v.1)! Remember, these 2 groups symbolize the evangelicals of modern Christianity, which we are a part of, on the outer fringes! Jesus warns against pride because when we believe the Bible and think we are right, we easily become proud! We need humility (v.12)!
There are many lessons here, but let’s look at just one. The Japanese Bible says do not be called “Sensei” in v.7-8. But most churches call their pastors that. Is it wrong? I believe this verse is talking about what cults do by worshiping their leader and putting him on a high pedestal by calling him Sensei, or Holy One, or Master, etc.
We shouldn’t do that in church. But just as we call our teachers in school Sensei, we can call pastors Sensei, as a sign of respect and not of worship! If we interpret this Scripture as we shouldn’t call pastors Sensei, then we can’t call our teachers in school Sensei, either!
