Devotion 1 of 2: Ezek 21

This chapter describes the judgment of the Lord against Israel (v.1-27) and against Ammon (v.28-32). The judgment would be done by the Sword of the Lord and would cut off both the righteous and the wicked (v.3-5). Unfortunately, in large-scale judgments, often good people are also cut down besides evil people.
V.14 says, “The third time let the sword do double damage.” Babylon’s sword invaded Judah and took captives 3 times: in 605 BC, 597 BC and 587 BC. The third time, 587 BC, did the greatest damage by destroying both Jerusalem and the temple!
God’s 2nd judgment was against Ammon. They, also, like other pagan nations, worshipped idols. God’s judgment that they would not be remembered (v.32) came to pass as they no longer exist as a people group.

Devotion 2 of 2: Matt 21

In this chapter, we see 7 parables of the kingdom of God shifting from the Jews to the Gentiles. 1) Jesus enters Jerusalem (v.1-11, 15-16). 2) Jesus cleanses temple (v.12-14). 3) Fig tree withers (v.18-19). 4) Jesus’ authority (v.23-27). 5) Two sons (v.28-32). 6) Wicked vinedressers (v.33-41). 7) Rejected stone (v.42-44).
Let’s look at one of the parables, no. 3, the fig tree that withered because it didn’t produce fruit. The fig tree symbolizes Israel. Not producing fruit symbolizes not accepting Jesus as the Messiah. As a result, the fig tree withered, which symbolized Israel dying spiritually, being cut off as God’s covenant people.
Let’s not forget that God plans to restore Israel into covenant relationship with Him in the endtime! So, let’s not get proud and look down on Israel, but rather pray for their restoration!
