Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Kings 1
This chapter describes how Adonijah tries to usurp the aging David’s throne (v.5-10), but how Nathan and Bathsheba persuade David to make Solomon king instead (v.11-40).
One lesson to learn here is the authority of the king’s word. Adonijah devised a great plan to make himself king by riding around the city on a chariot with 50 men running before him (v.5). He then gathered many people to his coronation, and it seemed like his plan would succeed (v.7-9)!
But when David announced that Solomon would be the next king (v.30-35), everything changed (v.36-40), and Adonijah’s followers became afraid and left him (v.49)!
Endtime application: We can have many ideas about the endtime, but God’s Word will settle it! Let’s pay attention to what God says about the LD!
Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Kings 2
This chapter tells us about David’s last days. In v.1-9, David tells Solomon to carry out his wishes to 3 men: Joab (v.5-6), the sons of Barzillai (v.7), and Shimei (v.8-9).
I want to focus on one man, Shimei. David wanted him punished. The reason was because when David was escaping during his son, Absalom’s rebellion, Shimei cursed him, called him a bloodthirsty man and threw stones at him (2 Sam 16:5-8).
I think David accepted those insults and didn’t strike Shimei because he felt responsible for his son’s rebellion. But now, after David’s death, it was time to punish Shimei for his sins. What we can learn from this is that we will reap what we sow (Gal 6:7)!
