Devotion 1 of 2: Jer 43
In this chapter we see the great influence and responsibility that leaders have. The leaders Azariah and Johanan ignore Jeremiah’s warnings about not moving to Egypt, accusing him of speaking falsely, when it was they who were telling lies (v.2).
Then they disobey Jeremiah’s warning, take all the Jews left in Judah and move to Egypt (v.5-7)! There, Jeremiah prophesies a powerful word of judgment, saying that Nebuchadnezzar, God’s servant, would destroy, kill and take captive the people from Egypt (v.8-13)!
Bad leaders, especially authoritarians, tell many lies to deceive their people. And they often make bad decisions which affect all their followers, but, of course, they lie about it to deceive their people even more.
In Azariah and Johanan’s case, their bad leadership led to all their followers being killed or taken captive in Egypt! If leaders take responsibility for their bad actions and change, there is hope for their improvement, but most don’t admit accountability, so their evil actions don’t change. Let’s choose good leaders.
Devotion 2 of 2: Rom 15
I want to focus on v.4, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” This verse teaches us the purpose of the OT Scriptures. They were written for our learning, that we might have hope!
Hope speaks of having a vision, a purpose, a goal to aim for! This is what the OT gives us, especially we who live in the endtime. Of course, our greatest hope is going to heaven for eternity with God! That is wonderful! But we also have a hope for the endtime revival that God wants to do to save perhaps billions of souls!
The OT, from Gen to Mal, gives us many stories, parables, and pictures of the LDR! The LDR can be seen in characters, like Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Ruth, Samuel, Job, David, Esther, Elijah, Elisha, Ezra, Nehemiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego, etc. Let’s learn from the OT!
