Devotion 1 of 2: Ruth 1

I would like to look at the spiritual meaning of this story. I believe the 4 main characters have spiritual, symbolic meanings: Naomi = Israel, Ruth = Church, Boaz = Jesus, Closer relative = Law. Also, I believe this story is a story of Restoration, the restoration of Naomi and the restoration of Ruth.
In v.1-5, we see Naomi and her family move away from Judah to Moab where they lived for 10 years (v.4). 10 is the number of testing in the Bible. (Dan 1:12-21 Daniel and 3 friends tested by eating for 10 days and found healthier. Rev 2:10 Smyrna tested by tribulation for 10 days; if faithful, given crown of life.)
So, Naomi was severely tested by the deaths of her husband and sons (v.3, 5), experiencing bitterness, emptiness and affliction (v.20-21). In the same way, Israel was bitterly tested during their captivity in Babylon from about 607 to 537 BC and their diaspora to the nations from 70 AD to 1948. The story of Naomi’s restoration is a picture of Israel’s restorations after Babylon and the diaspora.
In v.6-18, Naomi’s restoration to Judah is recorded. Her 2 daughters-in-law offer to go with her, but she turns them back, dissuading Orpah but not Ruth (v.10-14). Ruth makes the all-important decision to leave her country, people and gods and accept Naomi’s country, people and God in order to serve her (v.15-18)! This is Ruth’s 1st step in restoration, her salvation experience.
In v.19-22, Naomi reveals the brokenness of her heart, which needs to be restored so that she can have hope again. This parallels Israel’s brokenness after years of captivity and diaspora and her need of restoration.
Let’s pray that our relationship with Israel will be positive and uplifting and that Israel will be completely restored to relationship with God!

Devotion 2 of 2: Ruth 2

The relationship between Ruth and Naomi is a picture of the kind of relationship the church should have with Israel. Ruth shows her love for Naomi by leaving Moab to accompany her to Judah in chapter 1. In chapter 2, she serves Naomi by gleaning grain to provide food for both of them (v.2), which was done by poor people only. The church needs to love and serve Israel by praying for her salvation, visiting her land and being friendly to Jews.
Ruth is led to glean in Boaz’ field (v.3). When Ruth tells Naomi this, Naomi teaches her about Boaz, that he is a close relative, which means that he can redeem them, and then advises her not to go to any other field (v.20-23). This is a picture of how, through their writings in the Bible, the Jews teach the church about Jesus, our Redeemer, and the only source of eternal life.
Let’s forever honor and be thankful to Israel for revealing Jesus and salvation to us!
