Devotion 1 of 2: Josh 7
This chapter relates the story of Achan, who coveted and took some accursed things from Jericho, which the Lord had forbidden (v.21). Because of this sin, Israel was defeated at its 2nd battle, at the city of Ai (v.4-5).
The spiritual application is very clear—if we disobey God’s commandments, we lose the blessings and presence of God and will be defeated by AC. Let’s vow to be faithful to Jesus and not rebel against God and succumb to the temptations of the world!

Devotion 2 of 2: Josh 8
In this chapter we see how Israel conquered Ai after their initial defeat. This battle was very different and more complicated than the first battle against Jericho (v.3-8). Israel had to listen to God’s instructions each time they fought in order to gain the victory.
By contrast, Ai fought the same way as they had in the first battle against Israel (v.14-17). But in their overconfidence, they left their city completely unprotected, which allowed Israel’s 2nd army to ambush and destroy it (v.14-22). Israel’s 2 forces then completely overwhelmed Ai’s army, which was caught in the middle.
