Devotion 1 of 2: Gen 49
1-2) Simeon and Levi were cursed in their prophecy: “Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel” (v.7). The reason was because they deceived the people of Shechem into getting circumcised, then killed them with the sword to vent their anger toward Shechem for violating their sister, Dinah (Gen 34).
As punishment, God said he would divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel. This meant they would not receive their own land in Canaan as the other tribes would! In Simeon’s case, his tribe had to live in Judah’s land (Josh 19:1). This must have been humiliating for them.
In Levi’s case, God turned the curse into a blessing because his tribe sided with Moses and killed 3,000 people who worshiped the golden calf at Mt. Sinai (Ex 32:15-28). So the Lord changed his plan of making priests of the firstborn of Israel and chose the tribe of Levi instead (Num 3:5-13). Then God scattered Levi throughout Israel by commanding all the tribes to give Levi 48 cities to live in (Josh 21). This way Israel could seek help from the priests when needed because they were close by.

Devotion 2 of 2: Gen 50
(2/2)
V.20 is the Rom 8:28 verse of the OT! My paraphrase: You meant to do evil against me, but God changed it for good to save many lives. Yes, all the bad that happened to Joseph, God miraculously turned into good to prepare Joseph to fulfill his destiny of ruling Egypt and saving millions of lives! God is doing the same for us, to take all the bad Satan throws against us and using them for good to prepare the church to become the LDC and save hundreds of millions of souls around the world!
