Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Tim 5

1) They took care of widows who needed care! We see this in Acts 6 also, when 7 deacons were selected to manage the feeding of the Jerusalem widows! Two reasons the church did this ministry were because the government didn’t do it and perhaps some men were martyred and their families needed help!
2) In the Philippines, a pastor had an affair. When confronted, he repented, cut off the relationship, and submitted to correction. But the way of correcting was too strict. The pastor was made to stand before the congregation and confess his sin. Because he repented, I think it would have been better for 2 or 3 pastors to deal with him about the sin, and then later on give a report of the sin and repentance to the congregation without the pastor being there. But the pastor didn’t stumble and was restored to ministry after 2 years, and God is using him in a wonderful way.

Devotion 2 of 2: Song 6

In v.8, Solomon says there are 60 queens and 80 concubines, and they praise the Shulamite (v.9). It seems that when Solomon was courting the Shulamite he already had 60 wives and 80 concubines! This is hard for us to imagine. But he increased these numbers to 700 wives and 300 concubines in all (1 Kings 11:3). At first I thought this was so different than modern culture, but then I remembered reading about some famous sports heroes who boasted of having had affairs with hundreds of women! So this kind of lifestyle continues today, too! However, one very famous basketball star contracted AIDS because of his sexual behavior and had to quit playing because of the danger of spreading the disease through saliva, or sweat or blood to other players in the basketball game! Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should!
