Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Chron 3

I was surprised by the number of David’s wives and sons! His wives were: Ahinoam, Abigail (v.1), Maacah, Haggith (v.2), Abital, Eglah (v.3), Bath-shua (v.5), plus unnamed wives, and he also had concubines (v.9)! His sons numbered 19 by his wives, but he also had sons by his concubines! In having many wives, David was following the custom of kings of that day to have as many partners as they wanted or could take care of. As we know, his son Solomon took that custom to the extreme and had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3)! But this unbridled sexual lifestyle had its consequences as both David and Solomon fell because of it! We can truly say that marriage as God created it in the beginning is the best! Gen 2:24: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
