Devotion 1 of 2: Ezek 18

A popular proverb in Ezekiel’s day is found in v.2. It means: The father does something bad, and the children receive the punishment. Through it, the Jews expressed their feelings of God not being fair or they were being punished for something they didn’t do. Thus they could justify their rebellion against God’s law. But God prohibited that proverb from being used (v.3). And he states the truth in v.20: He who sins will die. The son will not suffer for his father’s sins, nor the father for his son’s sins. Each will receive the consequences of his own righteousness or sin! Let’s not be deceived by popular sayings but stand on God’s Word and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit!

Devotion 2 of 2: Matt 18

1) I think he is trying to make us realize how serious sin is. We would never want to cut off our hand or foot or tear out our eye! But even doing that would be better than going to hell is the point he is making. Thankfully, Jesus made a way for us to be forgiven for our sins without cutting off our body parts! If we don’t want to cut off our body parts, then by all means, we should quickly repent and ask for God’s forgiveness! If we do, God will forgive us and save us from hell and give us eternal life in heaven!
2) I don’t think I have implemented v.15-17. One reason is because I try to forgive anyone who does something bad to me, and I also feel that I am also responsible so I don’t condemn him. I think some difficult obstacles to do v.15-17 are the culture in Japan to not confront and the lack of courage to do it.
