Devotion 1 of 2: Jonah 1

Jonah lived in northern Israel around 800-750 BC. His book contains an amazing story, never heard of before, of a man swallowed by a great fish for 3 days, then coming out alive!
God sends Jonah to the Assyrian capital of Nineveh, but Jonah refuses and sails in the opposite direction (v.1-3)! However, he runs into a storm and is thrown overboard (v.4-15). This is when he’s swallowed by the fish (v.17) and later spat out onto dry land (2:10).
The reason Jonah disobeyed God was because Assyria was Israel’s enemy, so he wanted Assyria destroyed, not saved! In this way, the book contains NT truths, like loving our enemies and saving Gentiles. Another important point is that Jesus confirmed the authenticity of Jonah’s fish story, saying it was a picture of His burial (Matt 12:40).
Jonah had a hard time accepting Gentiles, but let’s learn from his mistakes and learn to honor other races!

Devotion 2 of 2: Heb 4

This chapter describes entering the Promised Land as entering God’s rest (v.3). What does this mean? I believe it means that Israel, or the LDC, cannot enter Canaan, or the LDR, by our own strength. We must rest and let God do it through us! We cannot kill the giants of Canaan, but if we trust God, He will do it through us!
That is why this chapter points out that we need faith and obedience to enter the land (v.2, 6, 11). When the 10 spies said the giants and cities of Canaan were too strong for Israel, they were relying on their own strength (Num 13:31-33)! But Joshua and Caleb relied on God, so they said Israel could take the land (Num 14:6-9)!
Endtime application: There will be these same 2 groups in the LD. Some will say the LDR is impossible. We can’t defeat our giant, AC, and the cities (AC’s forces) are too strong! But let’s rely on God and enter the LDR!
