Devotion 1 of 2: Amos 7
This chapter shows God is merciful, but it also shows there is a limit to His mercy, and when man crosses that limit, He will bring judgment.
God shows Amos that He will judge northern Israel with locusts (v.1-3), then with fire (v.4-6), but both times, Amos asks God to show mercy instead, so God relents. But apparently, Israel doesn’t change, so on the third time the Lord shows Amos a plumb line and says He will not allow Israel to pass by anymore (v.7-9).
The plumb line represents the limit of God’s mercy. When Israel crossed that line, judgment fell. This principle applies to all of mankind, too. When humans cross that plumbline, like at Sodom and Gomorrah and Noah’s day, judgment falls. Mankind is approaching that plumbline now and when it’s passed, the tribulation will begin.
Devotion 2 of 2: John 21
Although the disciples knew Jesus had risen from the dead, they still didn’t have a clear vision of what they were supposed to do. They thought Jesus was going to free Israel from Rome and set up an independent kingdom, but Jesus had squelched that idea at the cross.
But I believe their experience in v.1-14 of fishing all night and catching nothing, then meeting Jesus in the morning, obeying His command and catching a huge catch of fish, jarred their memory of their first encounter with Jesus. They also probably recalled that Jesus had told them He was making them fishers of men.
After that, Jesus told Peter 3 times to feed His sheep (v.15-19). Through these episodes, the disciples were slowly beginning to understand their mission. To lead people to Christ and feed and care for them!
