Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Chron 4
In this chapter we find the family lines of the tribes of Judah (v.1-23) and Simeon (v.24-43). They are often linked together because Simeon did not receive his own separate inheritance of land in Canaan but lived within Judah’s inheritance. This was his punishment for angrily killing the tribe of Shechem, who raped his sister Dinah (Gen 34).
The famous prayer of Jabez is written in v.9-10. Author Bruce Wilkinson’s book, “The Prayer of Jabez,” became a best seller and inspired many Christians to be more faithful in prayer! Praise God for examples of prayer warriors in the Bible who challenge us to seek God until He answers us!
Devotion 2 of 2: Gal 4
In this chapter Paul is saying that when man (Israel) was under the law, they were young children, not much different from slaves, waiting for the time when they could become (mature) sons (v.1-3). When that time came, God sent Jesus into the world to redeem those under the law and lift them to sonship (v.4-7).
In v.21-31, Paul uses the parable of Sarah and Hagar to point out the difference between the law and freedom from the law. Paul describes the law as living like a bondwoman (Hagar), or being born like her son Ishmael, who was born through the fleshly efforts of Abraham and Hagar.
By contrast, Paul describes Sarah as the freewoman, giving birth to Isaac through the promise of God, not by the work of the flesh. Paul is saying to be free is so much better than being a slave in bondage to the law!
