Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Chron 2

This chapter describes the genealogies of some families in Israel. One interesting thing was that Gentile blood was mixed into some family lines. Two examples are Shua, the Canaanitess, and Tamar, also a Gentile. They bore a total of 5 sons to Judah (v.3-4). This is significant because that was the family line of King David and Jesus.
Another striking feature was the appearance of concubines. Although not always recorded, wealthy or powerful men seemed often to have multiple wives and/or concubines. In this record, one example that appears is Caleb’s two concubines, Ephah (v.46) and Maachah (v.48), who bore Caleb 5 sons in all.
What we can learn today is that the Bible record is brutally honest, not trying to hide blemishes in Bible characters. This means we can trust the Bible as a historical account and not a religious fairy tale.

Devotion 2 of 2: Gal 2

This chapter shows us a dramatic picture of the conflict between the Judaism Christians, who had difficulty leaving the practices of Judaism, and the Grace Christians in the early church (v.11-16). The latter accepted Paul’s teaching that salvation came through faith, not works. This was a critical time, shaping the future of Christianity.
Paul is fighting for the gospel of grace, the revelation he had received from God. The other apostles and leaders were slower to understand grace. They agreed that Gentiles could be saved and ate with them, but when James’ people came, they separated from the Gentiles because the law forbad Jews from eating with Gentiles!
That Paul was able to almost singlehandedly shift Christianity from Judaism to Grace was a miracle! Let’s thank God for this mighty vessel who transformed Christianity from a branch of Judaism to the church built on grace!
