Devotion 1 of 2: 2 Sam 19

This chapter describes David’s return to Jerusalem after Absalom was defeated. David meets Mephibosheth in v.24-30 and asks, “Why didn’t you go with me?” Mephibosheth claims that his servant Ziba deceived him and went to see David alone. He further claims that Ziba slandered him. Ziba did say that Mephibosheth wanted to become king (16:3). But at that time Absalom was claiming the throne, so Ziba’s story was an obvious lie.
So, Mephibosheth and Ziba’s stories contradict each other! Which was true? I think Mephibosheth was telling the truth because he hadn’t washed his clothes, etc., from the time David left until he returned (v.24). Also, when David divided the land between the two, Mephibosheth said to let Ziba take it all, because he was just happy that David returned safely (v.30)! Ziba, on the other hand, by telling the lie about Mephibosheth was able to get his master’s land, so he had the motivation to lie and deceive David!
Once more, the need to discern lies and deceit is taught here.

Devotion 2 of 2: 2 Sam 20

This chapter tells the story of a 2nd rebellion that occurred against King David. This one was led by Sheba and centered among the northern tribes (v.1). Trouble had been brewing between north and south for a while as they bickered against each other in 19:9-15 and 19:40-43.
If David had solved this, it would have been wonderful, but because he couldn’t (some disputes are too great to resolve!), the seeds of disunity and discontent were sown, and later these produced a complete split into the northern and southern kingdoms!
Maintaining unity in a church or a movement is very difficult. Even the Azusa St. Pentecostal Revival had several splits that weakened the movement and decreased attendance. The divisions were caused by doctrinal, personal and also racial differences. After about 3 years, the fervor of the revival gradually cooled down, until around 1914, when it had become a small, local, Black American church.
Let’s pray and work hard to maintain unity in the LDR!
