Devotion 1 of 2: 2 Sam 11
This is the point in time when David’s life, his reign and his kingdom change. He commits adultery with Bathsheba; she gets pregnant, and when his plan to hide his sin by calling her husband Uriah back from war to sleep with Bathsheba fails, David commands Joab to have Uriah killed in battle!
There are many lessons we can learn from this story, and one of them is how this episode affected Joab. Joab was David’s commander of the army, his most trusted and reliable general. Up till now, David did almost no wrong, so it was easy for Joab to respect and obey David without question.
But now Joab’s respect for David is shattered! His conscience condemned him for causing one of his men to die in battle, but he probably blamed David for it. So, one lesson here is that our behavior will have consequences and will affect how others see us. Jesus said if we cause others to stumble, it would be like tying a millstone around our neck and drowning (Matt 18:6). Let’s work hard to not stumble others!
Devotion 2 of 2: 2 Sam 12
In this chapter, Nathan the prophet confronts David with his sin (v.7-12), and, to David’s credit, he admits his sin and repents (v.13). If there is one redeeming quality in this sad story of David’s sins, it is that he took responsibility for his evil deeds and confessed and repented of them.
This is a very necessary quality of a good leader. He must own up to his errors and admit he was wrong and be honest and transparent. If he doesn’t and lies or shifts the blame on something else or claims innocence of any wrongdoing, he is corrupting his position and poisoning his organization.
This is why Russia’s army is so weak. The top leader lies all the time, so his military commanders and all his officers do the same. So, the soldiers at the bottom don’t want to fight because they cannot respect their commanders or their president! Russia should have crushed Ukraine in a week, but 3 years have passed, and they are still fighting! Let’s pray our leaders will be honest and will take responsibility for their errors.
