Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 145
Some people say the Bible is full of contradictions. It is true that if you look at it critically, searching for “contradictions,” you will find them all over. But if you look at it sincerely, trying to understand what it’s saying, you can avoid stumbling over the “contradictions” and easily accept the common sense understanding!
Let’s look at one example in this psalm. If we read critically, we can say that v.9a, “The Lord is good to all…,” and v.20b, “…but all the wicked He will destroy” are contradictory! And technically, we would be right! That’s how critics think!
But if we read sincerely, trying to understand what the Bible is saying, we realize that overall, what it’s saying is true, but in extreme examples, or in specific instances, there will be times that it doesn’t apply. For example, if I said, “Today, I had a great day!” it doesn’t mean every minute was great, it means overall, the day was great! That’s using common sense to understand what people are saying. Let’s use that when we read the Bible!
Devotion 2 of 2: Ps 146
V.7a says, “(The Lord) executes justice for the oppressed...” Recently, President Trump made big news by announcing a plan for the U.S. to take over Gaza and turn it into a beach front resort city. Israel’s President Netanyahu welcomed the plan. But the Palestinians who live there, and many foreign national leaders condemned the plan, citing various reasons for it not to work. The main reason is the Palestinians don’t want to move elsewhere.
For such a plan to work, it must execute justice for the oppressed, as v.7a says. Trump’s plan made no mention of what the Palestinians would receive if they gave up their land. I propose that the U.S. pay each family $1M and each individual $250K. With that kind of money, they would willingly let go of their land. And they could move anywhere in the world, and the country would gladly receive them! The only problem is would the U.S. pay that amount?
