Devotion 1 of 2: James 4

I think King Saul was an example of a proud person and Joseph of a humble person. Saul started humble (1 Sam. 10), but after becoming king, he became proud and wanted to kill David to prevent him from taking his throne (1 Sam. 20:30-33). Joseph started off proud because of being his father’s favorite son and because of his dreams of ruling over his brothers (Gen. 37:3-10). But through his trials, his pride was broken, and he became humble enough so that, even though he was like a king in Egypt, he forgave his brothers for selling him as a slave (Gen. 45:1-15).

Devotion 2 of 2: Num 5

From the present world view in Japan, Num. 5:11-31 appears to be unfair to women because it only deals with wives whom husbands suspected of unfaithfulness, and it doesn’t deal with husbands suspected of unfaithfulness, which is much more common! I believe it reflects the effects of the Fall upon mankind. Women were placed under men as a result of the curse of sin (Gen 3:16b…”Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you”). The Law had to accommodate this or it would not be accepted. So if we look at this Scripture through that day’s culture, it was understandable and acceptable. But Jesus broke the curse of OT Law, and today, in Christ, there is neither male nor female (Gal 3:28).
