Devotion 1 of 2: Ruth 3
In this chapter, we see Naomi instructing Ruth on how to win Boaz’ heart so he would redeem them (v.1-5). Naomi’s instructions were for Ruth to wash, anoint herself, put on her best garment, go down to the threshing floor where Boaz would be resting, uncover his feet and lie down there. Then, when Boaz awakes, he will tell her what to do.
What we can learn from this episode is that in order to get to know Jesus intimately to become His bride, the church needs to love and obey the Word of God, which are the instructions the Jews have left for us!
And what does the Bible teach us about Jesus? He wants to wash us through His word to prepare us as His bride (Eph 5:25-27). He wants us to be anointed with the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Act 1:4-8). He wants us to wear spiritual garments, like the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (Is 61:3); and He wants us to bow down and follow His commandments, like to love one another, just as He loved us (John 13:34)!
Let’s honor the Jewish people by acknowledging their precious instructions to us about the Son of God and how to please Him and become His bride!
Devotion 2 of 2: Ruth 4
This chapter is the climax of the story of Ruth. Along with chapter 3, it has such a dynamic and important message for the church because it shows how the love relationship between Ruth and Naomi was the key to molding Ruth into Boaz’ bride and restoring Naomi and Ruth’s lives! In the same way, the church and Israel developing the right relationship of love in the last days will be key for the church to mature into Christ’s bride and Israel to be restored into relationship with God!
In v.1-12, Boaz negotiates with the close relative about redeeming Elimelech’s land, which Naomi had apparently sold because she had no source of livelihood with her husband and 2 sons dead. Boaz, the close relative and Elimelech were probably 3 brothers, with Elimelech being the oldest, then the close relative, then Boaz being the youngest.
At first, the close relative says he will redeem their brother’s land, because that was the responsibility of the next brother when an older brother died without children (Deut 25:5). But when he learns he must marry Ruth to perpetuate the names of the dead, he changes his mind and declines! The reason is because Moabites were not accepted into Jewish society (Deut 23:3-4), so marrying one could endanger one’s own inheritance.
What does this mean spiritually? The close relative is a picture of the Law. In the Bible, the Law could not redeem mankind because it was only for Jews, not for Gentiles. But Boaz was willing to marry Ruth! Why? I believe it was because he was a type of Jesus, who came to redeem, not only the Jews, but the whole world!
So, Boaz and Ruth married (v.13), gave birth to Obed, and King David was later born as their great-grandson (v.17)! This restored life to both Naomi (v.15) and Ruth, in the sense that their family line was not cut off from Israel, but could continue! And, for a double blessing, God added both King David and Jesus (Matt 1:1-16) into their family line! Praise God for His amazing grace!
